The Northwest of the US is facing the hottest day of an intense heatwave | Government & Politics

Fruit growers in central Washington tried to protect their cherry crops from the heat by using canopies, installing sprinklers, and sending workers into the night to pick.

Alaska Airlines said it provides “cool-down vans” to workers at Seattle-Tacoma and Portland International Airports, where temperatures on the ramp can be 20 degrees higher than elsewhere.

The heat wave stretched into the Canadian province of British Columbia, with the temperature in the village of Lytton reaching 115 F (46 C) on Sunday afternoon, marking an all-time high in Canada.

In Multnomah County, Oregon, which includes Portland, nearly 60 emergency teams have been working since Friday to provide the homeless with water, electrolytes and information on cooling, district spokeswoman Julie Sullivan-Springhetti said.

The district had 43 emergency rooms and clinics from Friday to Sunday because of a heat illness. It would normally only be one or two, Sullivan-Springhetti said.

Dr. Multnomah County’s health officer Jennifer Vines said she believed the heat wave would cause deaths, but how many remained to be seen.

“We worry about the elderly and we certainly do worry about people with frail health, but children can also overheat easily,” Vines said. “Even adults who are fit and healthy – at temperatures like this – ended up in the emergency room. ”
