SPOKANE, Wash. – Governor Jay Inslee’s vaccination mandate for government employees ends Monday and some people could lose their jobs.

The deadline for the full vaccination of civil servants is Monday, October 18, according to the mandate. Employees who are not vaccinated or who do not have a special permit can lose their jobs.

Those who receive either a medical or religious exemption are given reasonable accommodation and are not subject to “non-disciplinary discharge,” according to the governor’s office.

Who is included in the mandate?

  • Officer
  • College staff
  • K-12 employees
  • Childcare staff
  • Most health and long-term caregivers

Places like the Central Valley School District could vaccinate their employees or provide them shelter for their exemptions and keep their workers. However, others like Spokane Public Schools lost four employees over the course of the mandate.

Accommodation options for employees who have received exemptions include wearing N-95 masks, face shields with surgical masks, and other PPE. SPS also said the arrangements included restructuring and reallocation of jobs.

Some people have filed lawsuits over the mandate, including 25 Spokane firefighters who say the mandate violates their civil rights. The lawsuit alleges that “the mayor, fire chief and the city of Spokane refuse to grant religious or medical exemptions to city firefighters despite having accepted their exemptions to meet the arbitrary requirement for vaccination by October 18, 2021 to meet. “

On October 11, 88 percent of healthcare workers said they had received the vaccine. Almost 90 percent of government employees received the vaccine on October 4th.

To be considered fully vaccinated, government employees had to receive their second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, on October 4.
