Will Bednar hit a career high of 15 in six innings, the highest in the College World Series in 25 years, and the state of Mississippi held Texas 2-1 on Sunday night.
Bednar and Landon Sims set a CWS team record with 21 strikeouts, and the Bulldogs (46-16) posted an overall Division I record of 766 for their season.
Bednar’s total was the highest of an individual since Clemson’s hit Kris Benson against Miami 15 in 1996.
The national seeded Texas number 2 (47-16) brought only four balls into play against Bednar: three flyouts and Mitchell Daly’s base hit the middle in the fourth.
The Longhorns offense came to life at the end of ninth place. Mike Antico started with a homer, and Ivan Melendez and Cam Williams hit consecutive two-out singles to put the runners in the corners before Douglas Hodo III finished the game.
The Longhorns have lost their CWS prelude in each of their four appearances since 2009.
Bednar (8-1), brother of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher David Bednar, had a precise command with his low 90s fastball, mixed with a slider down and out of the strike zone.
He fanned out seven in a row from first through third innings and broke the school’s CWS record in a single game in the fourth with his 11th strikeout.
He went with Zach Zubia to start the seventh inning and threw another throw, his 108th, before MSU coach Chris Lemonis called on Sims.
The hard-throwing rescuer picked up where Bednar had left off and hit the first five punches he faced. He finished with six strikeouts.
MSU, the number 7 national seed who appeared for the third year in a row at the CWS, won both runs in the fourth ahead of Ty Madden (7-5). The first came home with a sacrificial fly and the other when Brad Cumbest sent a fly over the right field line that was just landing in fair territory. Hodo couldn’t make a game and Luke Hancock faced Cumbest’s triple from the start.
Madden hit 10 in seven innings and the teams’ 33 combined strikeouts set a CWS record.
MSU has dropped at least 10 rackets in six of its seven NCAA tournament games and in 49 of 62 games this season.
The CWS singles strikeout record in a nine innings game is 17 by Ed Bane of Arizona State against Oklahoma in 1972. The overall CWS record is 20 by Steve Arlin of Ohio State who played every 15 innings against Washington State in 1965 put up.
Mississippi State: Play in Virginia on Tuesday night.
Texas: Play Tennessee in an elimination game on Tuesday afternoon.
