MATCH PREVIEW: Courage Open 2022 NWSL Regular Season at Angel City FC
North Carolina Courage at Angel City FC
Friday, April 29 at 10:30 p.m. ET
Banc of California Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
CARY, NC (April 28, 2022) – The North Carolina Courage officially starts the 2022 NWSL regular season this Friday, April 29 against Angel City FC. The game begins at 10:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network and streamed live on Twitch (international).
Last time: For the second time (2020: 4-0-0; 2022: 3-0-3), Courage went unbeaten in all matches of the Challenge Cup group match, with the final match of that stint ending in a 2-2 draw against the Ghost of Washington. In the last minute of the first half, the Courage got a penalty after the first goal from Spirit’s Hatch and thus the chance to equalize. Debinha took the free-kick, and without hesitation, the Brazil international converted the penalty and buried a shot in the top 90. With that goal, Debinha became the first and only player in Challenge Cup history to score in four consecutive tournament . Later, in the 53rd minute, Malia Berkely collected her first NWSL goal to put the North Carolina team back in the driver’s seat. Hatch would call in their brace late in the half to seal the tie.
Additionally, the North Carolina Courage waived Kaitlin Fregulia, who was drafted in 2022, this week. Fregulia, a Long Beach State graduate, placed on the 45-day injured list in the preseason.

Courage from North Carolina – #9 Kerolin Nicoli
Forward Kerolin Nicoli signed with the club in January 2022 but wasn’t able to join the roster until April and hitchhiked to North Carolina’s game at NJ/NY Gotham FC on April 3 to make her club/NWSL debut . Since then, she has appeared in three games, made her first starting XI in last week’s game against Washington and played 145 minutes in total. Kerolin was also an important part of the Courage offense, creating key chances in every game and taking the penalty that resulted in Debinha’s goal in the last game.
Angel City FC – #23 Christen Press
Forward Christen Press has long been a USWNT fan favorite, but she’s also quickly found her way into the hearts of ACFC fans, especially after scoring the decisive goal in the club’s maiden win in last week’s Challenge Cup against the Portland Thorns . Known for her offensive skills, Press has recorded 45 goals and 11 assists in six seasons in the NWSL.
Next: The Courage secured their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals last Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Washington Spirit. North Carolina will return to cup action on Wednesday, May 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET when they take on Kansas City Current. The current Challenge Cup rankings for the entire league can be found here. The match will be streamed live on Paramount+ and Twitch (international).
