City forms partnership for broadband planning study

Federal Way selected Government Technology Group LLC as a partner for the Broadband Planning Study. The city received a broadband planning grant from the Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB).

The Government Technology Group will assist the city in studying community demand and availability of broadband services. The Government Technology Group will create a plan to identify world-class broadband needs and design to enable economic development and smart city initiatives in the years to come. The Broadband Planning Study will develop strategies for the use and deployment of broadband infrastructure for government facilities, commercial and industrial corridors, and will analyze options for expanding broadband resources for city residents.

The Government Technology Group will help map existing infrastructure, identify unserved and underserved areas, and develop incremental deployment strategies that align with planned projects. This will allow Federal Way to maximize efficiencies and cost-effectiveness and prepare for the equitable distribution of future technologies to our senior, underserved, and unserved communities. In addition, the Broadband Planning Study will assess Federal Way’s needs for smart city innovations, including intelligent transportation, public safety innovations, telemedicine, autonomous vehicles, and other applications.

An important part of this project is the assessment of the needs of the community. Therefore, the city has developed a survey that must be conducted in order to collect this data. The survey can be completed online at:

The study started at the end of May and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
