Bungie expands from Bellevue, Washington, to Seattle.
The independent video game developer confirmed Monday afternoon that it plans to sublet two floors of Seattle’s 2 + U tower, with space for about 300 employees.
This won’t replace Bungie’s current headquarters, a converted movie theater in downtown Bellevue.
As originally from the Puget Sound Business Journal, Bungie’s new offices in the 2 + U tower will take up half of Dropbox’s 120,000 square feet. Dropbox has never operated outside of space.
According to Bungie, more than 30% of its employees live in Seattle. The company employs a total of more than 1,000 people LinkedIn.
âWith the organizational and infrastructural development that we have undertaken since the beginning of the pandemic to support our growing local business – and with a hybrid flex-work program in progress – we wanted a hub in the region outside of our headquarters in Bellevue create. “Said Patrick O’Kelley, COO of Bungie, in a statement. “This gives our employees more flexibility in terms of housing and commuting and also supports our further expansion.”
Bungie’s new lease comes as questions arise about the future of downtown Seattle, which was largely deserted when companies sent workers home at the start of the pandemic.
Some companies are now trying to reduce their physical office needs by shifting to remote work.
The vacancy rate for subleases in Seattle skyrocketed after the pandemic began in early 2020.
The new Seattle office follows Bungie’s plans announced in February to expand the business dramatically. In January, the ground-breaking ceremony took place for a new, much larger headquarters, which will offer over 208,000 square meters of space after its completion next year.
Bungie is perhaps best known right now for its space wizard-with-gun game Fate 2, which puts players in the role of supernatural guardians fighting to protect the Earth’s solar system from a variety of alien threats.
Independent population tracker estimate Fate 2‘s current player population is just over 37 million, with around 1.4 million players on any given day in September 2021 determination franchise celebrated his 7th anniversary earlier this month.
Bungie also plans to open its first international office in Amsterdam sometime in 2022, and at least one new non-Determination-intellectual property launched before 2025 currently hiring for multiple positions in Bellevue and Seattle, with select remote worker positions available in California, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina, and elsewhere in Washington.
Originally founded in Chicago in 1991 by Alex Seropian, Bungie first built its reputation by being one of the few developers to develop games exclusively for Apple platforms. This included the horror / adventure game Paths in the dark (1993) and the surreal first-person shooter trilogy marathon (1994-1996).
Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000, which led to the studio’s next title in 2001 Halo: battle evolved, Shipping exclusively for the original Xbox. gloriole became a flagship franchise for the Xbox, and Bungie produced two successful sequels in 2004 and 2007.
Bungie split from Microsoft in 2007 and then released the first determination 2014 through a deal with Activision Blizzard (Call of Duty, World of Warcraft). That deal lasted until 2019, at which point Bungie parted ways with Activision and took over the publishing duties for Fate 2.
As part of going indie, Bungie renovated Fate 2‘s overall structure, which involved major changes to the profit model, content roadmap and available platforms. This includes a new free-to-play business model where any interested customer can play through most of what Bungie released before 2019 Shadowkeeper expand without paying Bungie for anything.
